China to cooperate with Australia in iron ore mining

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-11 14:34:32

Chinanews, Apr.11 - A relevant administrative authority of China
proclaimed recently that a Chinese steel enterprise will take part in
exploitation of an iron ore mine in west Australia which is supposed to
produce 10 million tons of finished products a year.
The State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of China
alleged on its official website that Anshan Iron & Steel Group Company of
China has reached an agreement with an Australian metal company on the
cooperative exploration of the Carrara iron ore mine whose annual
finished product output is estimated to reach 10 million tons.
Australia is a major iron ore exporter in the world. Proven reserves of
Carrara, which is located in west Australia, reach 700 million tons and
the total reserves in the mine will exceed 1 billion tons.
According to the agreement, the Chinese and Australian firms will each
hold a 50% stake of the project and are conducting further prospecting
and feasibility studies. Provided everything goes smoothly, the two
parties will carry on exploitation and operation based on the current
shareholding structure.
Statistics of China's Ministry of Commerce show that China imported 275
million tons of iron ore last year and is facing increasing pressure of
iron ore imports.

Biggest single-day drop of RMB exchange rate

www.chinanews.cn 2006-03-30 17:14:04

Chinanews, Mar. 30 - The US Federal Reserve raised its interest rate by
25 basis points on the early morning of Mar. 29th as expected, holding
back the uptrend of the RMB exchange rate. In the inter-bank forex market
on Mar. 29th, the middle price of the US dollar versus the RMB remarkably
soared 78 basis points to 8.0280 over the previous trading day. This
indicated that after having hit an all-time high for two consecutive
trading days, the RMB exchange rate dropped and saw the most abrupt fall
in a single day since the RMB exchange rate regime reform.
Echoing the trend of middle price, on Wednesday, the RMB exchange rate
showed the trend of marked decline in the matched trading market and the
inquiry trading market after hitting new highs for days in a row,
plummeting 35 basis points and 52 basis points respectively compared with
Tuesday.
Insiders believed that the RMB exchange rate's trend yesterday was
obviously affected by the Federal Reserve's raising its interest rate.
Just as investors expected, on the early morning of Mar. 29th, the
Federal Reserve Interest Rate Policy Session decided to raise the US
dollar interest rate by 25 basis points to 4.75%. Moreover, the Federal
Reserve revealed in an announcement after the session that deflationary
policies may be needed later, suggesting the possibility of further
interest rate hike and convincing the market that the Federal Reserve
will probably raise the interest rate again in May. Due to anticipation
of interest rate hike, the US dollar exchange rate started to grow on the
previous night. The exchange rate of the US dollar versus major
currencies went up to varied degrees, resulting in downtrend of the RMB
exchange rate.
